ACCUPLACER Testing
What is the ACCUPLACER Test?
ACCUPLACER is a computerized test that helps the college evaluate your skills and place you into appropriate courses. ACCUPLACER offers tests in reading, writing, and math. You will receive your ACCUPLACER test results immediately upon completion of testing, and your score report will include placement messages informing you what courses you should take.
Who is required to take ACCUPLACER?
The ACCUPLACER test is required for:
- All new Alpena Community College students who do not have A.C.T. Reading, English and Mathematics sub-scores of 18 or higher and wish to register for more than one course* (Note: placement tests will only be given in the subject areas where sub-score minimums were not met.)
- All new Alpena Community College students who do not have SAT Reading test scores of 25, Writing and Language test scores of 25 and Mathematics test score of 26.5 or higher and wish to register for more than one course* (Note: placement tests will only be given in the subject areas where sub-score minimums were not met.)
- Have not earned a minimum of 12 college credits including at least one college-level course in either English or Mathematics.
- All students who enroll for the first time in an English or Mathematics course.
*Students who accumulate 6 credit hours by taking one course per semester will be required to take the ACCUPLACER placement test battery.
How are my ACCUPLACER scores used?
ACCUPLACER is not used like a traditional test. There is generally no “passing score.” Rather, ACCUPLACER scores indicate areas in which you are strong and areas in which you may need help. Thus, ACCUPLACER can identify problems in major subject areas before they disrupt your educational progress, giving you the opportunity to prepare more effectively for needed courses. You and the college can use scores from ACCUPLACER tests to prepare a course of study that will be appropriate, relevant, and meaningful for you.
What will I need to take the test?
A picture ID is required to take the test.
The ACCUPLACER test is taken on the computer. We provide pencils, pens, calculators and scrap paper. Cell phones are not allowed in the testing room.
Retesting
Retesting is appropriate when there is reason to believe that a score obtained from previous testing does not accurately reflect the examinee's true level of knowledge or skill. Typically, retesting is appropriate in two situations: (1) when factors other than the examinee's ability are believed to have influenced the previous testing and (2) when the scores obtained from earlier testing are no longer believed to reflect the student's current ability. A retest must be authorized or approved by an ACC academic advisor.
