ACC Baseball Team 2023

Play ball! Alpena Community College has revived the men’s baseball team after a nearly 50-year hiatus. The decision
was announced in May 2022 and since then there has been a flurry of activity as the team prepares for competition.
Dr. Don MacMaster, ACC president, and Cindy DeRocher, athletic director, cited several reasons for bringing the team
back including longstanding community support for baseball, the relatively low cost to support the sport, and the anticipated enrollment bump that adding an athletics team would bring to the College.

ACC then went to work to find a coach. After an extensive search, ACC hired Robert Enslen, an award-winning player and coach, as head coach of the Lumberjacks. With Enslen and his assistant coaches in place, recruiting began in earnest.
Quickly over 30 players from throughout Northern Michigan and beyond expressed interest in being on the team!

The College also secured the use of Veterans Field in Ossineke to be the new home of Lumberjack baseball.

Currently, the team is practicing at the new field in preparation for a full schedule of games beginning in March 2023.

Head Coach: Rob Enslen - 1st Year

enslenr@alpenacc.edu

Rob EnslenRob Enslen was named ACC’s first baseball coach in nearly 50 years in June 2022. The ACC baseball program was put on hiatus following the 1973 season.

Coach Enslen is a native of Middleville, Michigan, attended Thornapple Kellogg High School, and played four years at Oakland University and one year of professional baseball.

At Oakland, Enslen was a two-time All-Horizon League selection. He finished his career with the Grizzlies fourth all-time in career hits. He graduated in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in communication.

“I learned along the way what it takes to play the game the right way and how to carry yourself on the field and off the field,” Enslen said. “It’s an exciting time for the community and I’m excited to bring college baseball to Alpena.”

Lumberjacks Earn First Win Against Rochester
March 23, 2023

The ACC Lumberjacks baseball squad picked up the first ACC baseball win in 50 years with a 12-9 win over the Rochester University JV squad in Rochester Hills, MI in game two of a doubleheader. The Lumberjacks lost the opener, 13-11.

“It was exciting to get the first win under our belts,” Coach Rob Enslen said. “It gives us momentum headed into conference play this weekend.”

In game one, Rochester led 6-2 after one inning but the Lumberjacks rallied to take an 11-6 lead after batting in the sixth. The Warriors responded with a seven-run sixth inning to take a 13-11 advantage into the last inning. Jake Griffis doubled and Matt Thompson was hit by a pitch to bring the lead run to the plate with no one out but the Lumberjacks were unable to score.

Justin Abel starred in relief, throwing four shutout innings while striking out two.

At the plate, ACC pounded out 11 hits, led by Griffis with four including two doubles. Caleb Stuck had two hits, three runs, and two RBI. Eric Rogers had two hits and two RBI.

In the nightcap, it was the Lumberjacks who used a seven-run inning to key the victory. Trailing 5-2 after four innings, ACC scored seven in the fifth and three in the sixth to take control.

Spencer Nash doubled, singled twice, and drove in two. Matt Thompson singled, doubled twice, and scored two runs. Stuck doubled and had two RBI.

On the mound, Beau Vizina threw five innings to pick up the win for ACC.

The Lumberjacks (1-7) travel to Muskegon Community College to open Michigan Community College Athletic Association Northern Conference play on Friday. ACC will play two games on Friday, beginning at 2 p.m., followed by another doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday.

Lumberjacks Start Season with Promise
March 18, 2023
The Alpena Community College baseball team traveled to Toledo, Ohio to face Owens Community College. It was the season opener for the Lumberjacks on Friday, as Owens came in 8-1 after a Florida trip and ranked #6 in the NJCAA Division 3.

In game 1, the Lumberjacks put runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs in the first, but Caleb Stuck's line drive was snared in center field, ending the rally. The Express took advantage, using a four-run third inning to break the game open, winning 9-1.

For ACC, Corey Victor doubled, walked, and scored. Jake Griffis, Spencer Nash, Eric Rogers, and Gage Kangas all tallied hits. Wyatt Crawford started and took the pitching loss, despite giving up only five hits, two earned runs, and one walk in four innings of work.

In the nightcap, ACC took an early 1-0 lead as Griffis singled, advanced to 3rd on an error, and scored on a passed ball. Owens tied it up in the bottom of the first when a Lumberjack error kept the inning alive and B. Decksrosh followed with an RBI triple. The Express tacked on three more runs on a  D. Edwards two-out, two-run double, to take a 4-1 lead.

Alpena's Aaron Guitar locked up in a pitcher's duel with Owens' H. Allen for the next three innings. Guitar finished with five strikeouts in a complete game. Allen struck out nine Lumberjacks in his six innings of work. Each team tacked on single runs and Owens' K. Egnor picked up the save with a scoreless inning of relief.

Matt Thompson paced ACC with two hits and a run scored. Griffis, Nash, and Rogers again had hits for the Jacks.

"You never want to accept losing," coach Rob Enslen said, "But I saw a lot of positives out there. If we can tighten up some things and keep playing with that mentality, we will be fine this season."

ACC (0-2) plays Owens (10-1) again tomorrow in a doubleheader. The teams were scheduled to square off in a doubleheader today, Sat. Mar. 18 but the games were called due to freezing temperatures.
