Futures for Frontliners
Futures for Frontliners is a new state scholarship program to give Michiganders who risked their health and lives working in essential industries during the state's COVID-19 shutdown tuition-free access to public community colleges including Alpena Community College.
While enrollment in the state program opens in September, and the scholarship will be available starting next spring, qualified frontliners can take steps now to be ready when it starts.

Do I Qualify?
The program is open to Michiganders without college degrees who worked in frontline jobs in essential industries during Michigan's COVID-19 shutdown this past spring.
Eligible workers include:
- Hospital and nursing home staff
- Grocery store employees
- Childcare providers serving critical infrastructure workers
- Personal protective equipment manufacturers
- Public safety employees
- Garbage collection workers
- Delivery drivers
- Any employee in an area listed in an essential industry during the second quarter of the calendar year 2020

What is Futures for Frontliners?
- Futures for Frontliners is a last-dollar scholarship program for essential workers to attend community college tuition-free – including those without a high school diploma or equivalency.
Who is eligible?
- All essential workers in Michigan without a college degree or high school equivalency who worked at the height of the COVID-19 crisis.
- Specifically, applicants must have worked at least half-time in 11 of 13 weeks from April 1 through June 30.
How do Frontliners apply?
- Frontliners returning or applying for community college can apply online starting September 9 at Michigan.gov/frontliners. The application will take less than 10 minutes to complete. Applications for the program must be submitted no later than December 31, 2020.
- Frontliners interested in pursuing their high school completion first, or while dual-enrolled in community college, may apply online starting September 10 at Michigan.gov/Frontliners. The application will take less than 10 minutes to complete. Applications to the program must be submitted no later than December 31, 2020.
When can a person accepted to the Frontliners program start classes?
- Frontliners returning to or starting community college or seeking their high school diploma or equivalency may start classes anytime in 2021 and as early as the winter semester beginning in January of 2021. Frontliners can pursue up to an associate degree or skills certificate at their local community college tuition-free. Frontliners can prepare for and attain a high school diploma or equivalency, potentially prior to enrollment in postsecondary education or training, or while dual enrolled.

What if I've already completed a Certificate program?
Even if you completed a certificate program in the past, as long as you meet all of the eligibility requirements and haven’t completed your associate degree yet, you are eligible to apply for this scholarship.
