Five alumni athletes, a team, and a legendary coach will be honored as Lumberjack Legends on Saturday, September 7 inside ACC’s Besser Technical Center.
This year’s Lumberjack Legends are:
- James Dutcher, Athletic Director & Coach, 1958-1966
- John Stosick, Swimming, NJCAA champion (200-meter backstroke), NJCAA runner-up (100-meter backstroke), 1968
- Alonzo Weatherly, Men’s Basketball, NJCAA honorable mention All-American, 1979
- Diana Flakes, Women’s Basketball, NJCAA 2nd team All-American, 1981

- Josh Walker, Men’s Basketball, NJCAA 3rd team All-American, 2003
- 1966 Men’s Basketball Team, Region 12 Champions
The 2024 class includes four ACC athletes who achieved All-American status, a national champion in swimming, plus ACC’s most successful basketball team, which played in the 1966 national junior college championship tournament. That team was Coach Jim Dutcher’s last at ACC before he departed for head coaching duties at Eastern Michigan University. He went on to be an assistant coach at the University of Michigan before taking the helm at the University of Minnesota as their men’s head basketball coach.
Tickets to the Lumberjack Legends Athletics Hall of Fame ceremony and dinner are limited and only available in advance. The cost is $35 per person, $15 for kids 12 and under. They can be purchased online by:
- Mailing a check to 665 Johnson Street in Alpena
- Calling the ACC Foundation at 989.358.7359
- Visiting the online ticketing website
The evening will begin at 5:30 pm with hors d'oeuvres, followed by dinner at 6:30 and the program at 7:30. Former ACC athletic director Max Lindsay will be the evening’s host.

ACC Aligns Spring Break with Area Schools
Date: July 15, 2024
ACC and school districts in the Alpena-Montmorency-Alcona Educational Service District now have the same spring break dates for the upcoming year! This scheduling coordination will enable high school students from Alpena, Alcona, Hillman, and Atlanta to attend ACC courses with minimal disruption while still being able to get away for spring break or participate in high school activities like athletics.
ACC Spring Break 2025: March 17-21, 2025!
ACC would like to thank everyone who was involved in the discussions and planning for aligning our academic calendars, including ACC faculty, our academic partners in the local schools, and the AMA-ESD. We believe this change will make participation in dual enrollment and early college opportunities at ACC even better for local high school students.

The Alpena Community College Men’s Basketball Team has clinched a spot in the postseason and will host the first round of the NJCAA Division II Great Lakes District B Men’s Basketball Championship starting Tuesday, March 5. While the majority of the tournament will take place at Mott Community College in Flint, the first round of tournament play will be hosted at the home court of the higher-seed; ACC is the higher seed in its first-round match-up and will host the game in Alpena. “This is a special night for the team and for ACC Athletics,” said ACC Athletic Director Allen Telgenhof. “A loud engaged crowd can really pick up a team’s adrenaline, and I’m confident that our fans and our student section will get it going.”

Collaboration with Ann (Lappan) Garant, Managing Attorney, Cooley Innocence Project. Mary is a former student of mine and daughter of Tom and Mary Lappan. As Managing Attorney for the Cooley Innocence Project in Lansing, she recently received a grant through the PNC Foundation for community outreach and education. The grant involves holding panel events featuring our exonerees and possibly other members from the legal community in areas of Michigan where there isn't a large presence of innocence work or any established Conviction Integrity Units. They want to educate areas where they might not be familiar with the Innocence Project or understand the causes/impacts of wrongful convictions. They held their first grant-associated event in Grand Rapids on Wrongful Conviction Day in October. It was a big success and received a lot of great feedback. They plan on holding an event in the Tri-City area in early 2024. They will be expanding their reach and bringing the program to Alpena. Matt Wojda is her legal contact with the Alpena County Bar Association. Here is a link to Cooley Innocence Project. This event will be remote accessible – the link is forthcoming. This is not an ACC-sponsored event.
