Student Outcome Data
A clearly defined pathway to success is both valuable to our students and important for the faculty and staff of Alpena Community College. The College has clearly stated institutional goals for student learning at three levels: course, program, and cocurricular. ACC believes the process for assessing the students’ achievement of these goals is effective and demonstrates the achievement of learning.
At the course level, detailed course objectives and their assessment are required pieces of documentation reviewed and approved by the Curriculum Committee. The actual assessment of each course objective is conducted within a class and is the responsibility of the instructor to use that assessment to measure the level of effective learning taking place in that course. Necessary adjustments in the teaching and learning process are the responsibility of the instructor.
To support institutional assessment at the course level, the College has defined five core competencies. ACC believes that students obtaining college degrees should be exposed to a common core of educational experiences. The Core Competencies are integrated, reinforced, and assessed throughout the curriculum. The Core Competencies can be found on page 33 of the College Catalog.
Most occupational program-level assessments take place through third-party testing. Assessment in programs not leading to third-party credentialing has individually designed program assessments such as program level capstone projects, course evaluations, and mock crime scenes.
Cocurricular assessment consists of learning activities, programs, and experiences that reinforce the institution’s mission and values and complement the formal curriculum. Examples: Study abroad, student-faculty research experiences, service learning, professional clubs or organization, athletics, honor societies, career services, etc. Cocurricular activities support what is happening in the classroom, outside the classroom.
The Student Learning Committee supervises the Process for Assessment of the core competencies.
